Letter: Ion–molecule reactions of the benzoyl ion [C6H5CO]+ with compounds containing the amine functional group in a quadrupole ion trap

ABSTRACT:
The benzoyl ion, [C6H5CO]+, reacts within the time and pressure regimes of the quadrupole ion trap with compounds containing an amine functional group to yield characteristic [M + 105]+, [M – NH2]+ and [C6H5CONH3]+ product ions. Product ion distributions are determined by the amine environment, making it a potentially useful probe for establishing the presence and chemical environment of amine groups.

Keywords: Ion–molecule reactions, benzoyl, ion, chemical ionisation, quadrupole ion trap, mass spectrometry.
