ABSTRACT: | ||
In this paper the design and first results of a new hybrid mass spectrometer are presented. This instrument represents a combination of a quadrupole ion trap with a reflectron/time-of flight mass spectrometer (ReTOF). As a result of this setup, ions can be stored in the three-dimensional quadrupole without any buffer gas for long periods. Unimolecular reactions in the gas phase are investigated with the instrument. The ReTOF acts as a mass resolving device which provides the necessary mass resolution for the hybrid instrument. It also allows some further examination of the stored ions by photodissociation experiments in the second order space focus plane of the ReTOF. Starting with theoretical calculations and the development of the new instrument (TrapTOF) all advantages, instrumental parameters and capabilities of the instrument are demonstrated. | ||
