ABSTRACT:
Attempts to gain access to an indirect mass spectrometric characterization of dimeric [60]fullerene derivatives such as C119, C120 and C120O have been made. By exploring the ability of different hosts to form hostguest complexes with [60]fullerene derivatives it was intended to obtain products which could be analyzed by fast-atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry. g-Cyclodextrin (CD) and several calixarenes have been tried as potential hosts, but only CD was capable of forming the desired complexes in some cases. Besides the well-known complex [2CD + C60], prepared for testing purposes, we report, for the first time, the formation and FAB mass spectra of [2CD + C60O] and [2CD + C60O2].

Keywords: Hostguest complexes, fullerenes, g-cyclodextrin, calixarenes, fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry.
