ABSTRACT:
Gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric data on eight known pyridine-3-carboxylate alkaloids of betel nut (Areca catechu) have been standardised and applied to the characterisation of a further 16 basic compounds extracted in low concentrations. Nine groups of compounds have been recognised and homologues allocated to these groups on the evidence derived from their electron ionisation mass spectra and gas chromatographic retention times.

Keywords: pyridine-3-carboxylate alkaloids, Areca catechou, betel nut, GC/MS, identification
