Edited by Professor Peter B. Armentrout
The Encyclopedia of Mass Spectrometry will be a 10 volume work published over a 3 year period, 2003-2005.
Over the last couple of decades, the technique of Mass Spectrometry has changed from a specialist tool, to a widely available and used tool to study chemical and biological processes in the broadest sense. During this transformation it has become clear that many scientists now using the technique do not actually have the theoretical and practical background needed to fully take advantage of the possibilities offered.
Over 7 years ago plans were put in place to establish a comprehensive work that would introduce those who are new to the field of Mass Spectrometry to its theory and techniques. This idea materialised into the concept of an Encyclopedia of Mass Spectrometry, which has now become reality.
The Encyclopedia of Mass Spectrometry will be a truly major reference work, consisting of 9 volumes covering different subjects plus an overall index in Volume 10.
Being introductory texts into the various subjects, the articles are intended to cover their specific subject area completely and generally cover three areas:
1) original or pioneering work in the area, giving credit to founders
2) seminal contributions to the area, including excellent examples illustrating a given application
3) useful review articles.
Articles are intended to be tutorial in nature, and both advantages and disadvantages have been stated. Where possible, articles are divided into primary (basic) considerations, and advanced topics. The first being aimed at the novice (e.g., new student to the field) and the second to the experienced practitioner not necessarily expert in that area.
